A teen white elephant swap can include a school class, a youth group, a sports team, a sibling or cousin swap, or a mixed family party where teens play alongside adults. The picks that hold up across all of those settings need no size, no account, and no shared hobby, so the organizer does not have to know each teen’s taste.
This page lists ten gift ideas in four categories, the budget bands we suggest for a teen group, the items to leave out, and the steal rules. Every pick is our own design, and the bands are rough guides because we do not publish exact current prices.
The white elephant gifts for teens on this page are items a teen can use right away without being personal: a snack or drink, a small game, a phone or desk accessory, or a comfort item. Skip sized clothing and anything that assumes a hobby. The group sets the spending band, and the picks below are built for the low bands we suggest for a teen swap. At PartyGameKit, we build free tools for gift exchanges and party games, and the picks on this page are our own designs for swaps where the organizer does not know each guest’s taste.
White Elephant Gifts for Teens: Picks That Work for Almost Any Teen
A teen swap can take several forms: a school class, a youth group, a sports team, a sibling or cousin swap, or a mixed family party where teens play alongside adults. The picks below work across all five because none of them depends on a size, an account, or a particular hobby. We group them into four categories so you can match a category to your group.
Snacks and Drinks
There is no size to match and no account to set up. We earn a commission on Amazon links.
International Snack Box
A sampler box of international snacks or candy holds several different items in one package. Search for an international snack box to compare the sets on offer.
Insulated Water Bottle
A reusable insulated water bottle is one of the snack and drink picks. It also fits the funny-and-usable rule covered later on this page, since a novelty-style bottle is one example. Browse insulated water bottles and pick a design that looks a little playful if your group wants a laugh.
Games and Play
Compact Card Game for Teens
A compact card game that plays in 15 minutes is a game pick for the group. Search for a card game for teens to compare options.
Pocket Puzzle Set
Look for one through a pocket puzzle search.
Phone and Desk Gear
Phone Stand or Ring Grip
A phone stand or ring grip is a phone accessory. A goofy design fits the funny-and-usable rule on this page. Search for a phone stand to see the designs available.
LED Strip Lights
LED strip lights are a desk gear pick. Compare LED strip lights listings before you choose a color or length.
Long Charging Cable
A long charging cable is a phone accessory. Search for a charging cable to compare lengths.
Comfort and Creative
Every item in this category avoids sizing. The throw blanket is a comfort pick, and the sketchbook set and friendship bracelet kit are creative picks.
Lap-Size Throw Blanket
A plush, lap-size throw is a comfort pick. Search for a throw blanket to compare the options.
Sketchbook and Pen Set
A sketchbook and pen set is a creative pick. Search for a sketchbook set to see what the sets include.
Friendship Bracelet Kit
A friendship bracelet kit is a creative pick. A teen can make bracelets with a friendship bracelet kit. Search for a friendship bracelet kit to compare kits.
Other Picks Worth a Search
Several other listed picks fit the categories above. A popcorn gift set is a snack pick. A trivia card deck is a game pick. A mini basketball hoop or foam disc suits a yard, but basketball is a sport, so use it only when the whole group shares that sport. A bluetooth speaker is a small playback item, and simple earbuds in the budget band are a phone accessory. Fuzzy socks in one-size avoid the sizing problem, and a photo clip frame holds prints with clips.
Setting a Budget for a Teen Swap
The group usually sets the spending ceiling itself. Our suggestion is a low band: under 15, under 25, or 25 to 50, depending on the group. Write the band on the invitation.
The arithmetic is simple. For a group of 10, a band of 25 means at most 250 dollars in gifts in total (10 × 25). A band of 15 means at most 150 dollars (10 × 15). Use the total to decide which band fits the budget of the whole group.
A school or youth-group swap should use the lowest band so no one is left out. The 25 to 50 band is the highest band we suggest. A 25 to 50 band is not the right choice for a school or youth-group swap.
We do not publish exact current prices for these items, so the bands are rough guides and not quoted costs. For ideas at a lower ceiling, see white elephant gifts under $25.
What to Skip in a Teen Exchange
Six kinds of gift are worth skipping in a teen swap.
- Sized clothing.
- Skincare or fragrance, because these are personal. In our design, a gift for one gender in a mixed group tends to go unstolen.
- Anything tied to one fandom or sport, unless the whole group shares it.
- Anything alcohol- or vape-related, which is inappropriate and illegal for minors.
- Items that need a subscription or account.
- Very breakable decor.
If the whole group shares one fandom or sport, an item tied to it fits, and the rest of the list stays the same.
Funny or Useful for Teens
Our design rule is to choose an item that is a little funny and usable at the same time. In our design, items like these get stolen more than a pure joke does, so the picks on this page lean toward usable items with a playful touch.
For funny-only picks, see funny white elephant gifts.
Running the Swap
A teen swap benefits from two rules, and our design uses both: a steal cap of three per gift, and a rule that a stolen gift cannot be stolen straight back. The white elephant rules page covers both rules in full.
The white elephant generator sets turn order. If you are choosing a category for a particular teen, see the gift finder.
Write the band on the invitation, then open the white elephant generator to set turn order before the first gift is opened.
