Our Elfster review comes down to one line: Elfster is the most complete free Secret Santa organizer for a group that wants the draw, the wishlists and the reminders in one place, and it costs nothing to use as of October 2026.
It fits office exchanges and large family draws best. If your group would rather skip accounts and get matches by text, DrawNames or Secret Santa Organizer is the lighter choice.
Elfster Review in Brief
Elfster is a free website and phone app that runs a Secret Santa from invitation to gift day. The organizer creates an exchange, invites people by email, sets a budget and a date, and Elfster draws the names and tells each person privately who they have.
| Question | Answer as of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Price | Free, with no subscription or paid upgrade listed |
| Best for | Office exchanges, extended families, groups of 10 or more |
| Group size | From 3 people up; the App Store listing says “3 to 300+” |
| Exclusions | Couples, kids from adults, and last year’s matches |
| Wishlists | Items from any online store, plus experiences and gift cards |
| Languages | English, Spanish and French on the web |
| Apps | iPhone and Android, though joining works in any browser |
| App Store rating | 4.9 out of 5 from 331,484 ratings |
| Biggest drawback | Wishlists and reminders depend on everyone making an account |
Elfster says more than 47 million gift givers in over 50 countries have used it. That figure is self-reported on Elfster’s how-it-works page, while the rating count above comes straight from the Elfster App Store listing.
What Elfster Does Best
Elfster lets one organizer hand off almost every chore of a gift exchange. Each feature below removes a specific job from the organizer’s list.
Automatic Draw with Smart Exclusions
Elfster draws names on the date you schedule, so nobody has to pull slips from a hat or keep a secret list. Exclusion rules stop couples from drawing each other and can keep kids from being paired with adults, which matters in a family draw where a ten-year-old should not be shopping for an uncle.
Elfster also tries to avoid repeat matches. Its help article on repeat draws says the draw considers recent Elfster draws when you mark that the group has used Elfster before. Delete last year’s exchange and that history goes with it, so archive old exchanges instead of clearing them out.
Wishlists That Travel with the Person
Each participant can build a wishlist with links from any online store, custom ideas, experiences and gift cards. The person who drew them shops straight from that list, which cuts the “what do they even want” texts that stall most exchanges.
Elfster also keeps wishlists useful outside the holidays:
- Registry for Me keeps one wishlist active across birthdays, weddings and holidays, so a participant does not rebuild it every December.
- Price drop alerts watch linked items and notify the shopper when a price falls.
- Birthday reminders come from following friends, which keeps the wishlist useful after the holidays.
Anonymous Questions to Your Match
A Secret Santa can send their match an anonymous question inside Elfster, such as a shirt size or a favorite coffee order. The match answers without learning who asked, so the gift lands closer to the mark without spoiling the surprise.
Elfster’s own guide points out a limit worth planning around. Anonymity only holds if everyone stays anonymous, because in a group of six, two people who reveal themselves narrow the field fast. Set a “no hints until gift day” rule in the exchange description if the surprise matters to your group. Our list of Secret Santa questions gives the questions worth asking.
Reminders and Remote Members
Elfster sends reminder emails to people who have not joined and lets the organizer set a joining deadline. That saves the organizer from chasing people one at a time in the group chat.
Remote members are handled too. Elfster collects shipping addresses privately and shares each one only with the person buying for that participant. A hybrid exchange works, with in-person members bringing gifts while remote members ship theirs. For a fully remote group, our guide to a virtual Secret Santa covers the video-call side.
How Elfster Compares to DrawNames, Giftster and Secret Santa Organizer
Elfster stands apart by bundling the draw, wishlists, multiple exchange formats and reminders at no cost. The three closest rivals each win on one narrower point.
| Feature | Elfster | DrawNames | Giftster | Secret Santa Organizer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price | Free | Free | Free app, no in-app purchases listed | Free, ad-supported |
| Account to draw names | No account needed to join | No account needed | Members join a Giftster group | No account needed |
| How matches arrive | Email and app notifications | Email, text, WhatsApp or social media | In-app, private even from the organizer | Private email |
| Exchange formats | Secret Santa, White Elephant, Yankee Swap, Dirty Santa | Secret Santa | Secret Santa | Secret Santa |
| Repeat-match protection | Yes, from past Elfster draws | Not stated | Not stated in its App Store listing | Not stated, but imports a previous party’s group |
| Standout feature | Anonymous questions and price drop alerts | Live draw everyone watches together | Hidden “purchased” marks on family lists | 17 interface languages |
| Phone apps | iPhone and Android | iPhone and Android | iPhone and Android | None, web only |
| Verdict | Best all-in-one exchange | Best for a quick draw by text | Best for year-round family lists | Best for multilingual groups |
DrawNames wins on speed. Its site says drawing names needs no account, invitations go out by text or WhatsApp, and everyone can watch a live draw at the same moment. Pick DrawNames when half the group will never open an email link.
Giftster wins for families who buy for each other all year. Its App Store listing shows shoppers marking items reserved or purchased without the list owner seeing it, plus lists parents manage for children. Our Elfster vs Giftster comparison goes deeper on that split.
Secret Santa Organizer wins for international groups. It runs in 17 languages with no app and no account, and its FAQ says the service is paid for by advertising. Elfster covers English, Spanish and French, which handles most North American offices but not a team spread across Europe.
Elfster Pricing
Elfster costs nothing for organizers or participants as of October 2026. Its FAQ says there are no fees for setting up an exchange, drawing names or using wishlists, and the Elfster App Store listing says there are “no hidden fees, subscriptions, or premium upgrades.”
The real cost is the gift budget, which the organizer sets as any dollar amount. For a 20-person office exchange at $25 each, the group spends $500 on gifts and $0 on Elfster.
Elfster’s FAQ does not explain how Elfster makes money. Its site does carry a shop and an “Advertise with Us” page for brands, which points to retail and advertising income rather than user fees.
Elfster Drawbacks to Plan Around
Elfster has four rough edges, and each one has a simple workaround.
- Late RSVPs miss the draw. Elfster’s help article on drawing names says anyone who has not RSVP’d by draw time is left out. Set the draw date two or three days after the joining deadline so reminder emails have time to work.
- Undoing a draw deletes every match. “Undo Everyone’s Draw” permanently erases the old pairings. To add one latecomer, add them to the existing exchange instead, which Elfster says works without a redraw.
- Wishlists need an account. People can join an exchange without signing up, but they cannot manage a wishlist. Ask the holdouts to answer a short gift questionnaire instead, using our questionnaire builder.
- The iPhone app is English only. The App Store listing shows English, while the web version adds Spanish and French. Send Spanish- or French-speaking members the web link.
Odd-numbered groups are not a problem, because Elfster builds the matches automatically for any count of three or more. Our guide to a Secret Santa with an odd number of people explains why that works.
White Elephant and Yankee Swap on Elfster
Elfster supports White Elephant, Yankee Swap and Dirty Santa exchanges, but it manages the event rather than the stealing. Invitations, the budget, the date and address collection all work the same way as a Secret Santa.
A Yankee Swap does not use assigned pairs, so names should not be drawn at all. Elfster’s help center tells organizers to turn on “Do not draw names automatically on the Draw Date” under Privacy Settings. Skip that step and Elfster pairs everyone off on the draw date, which confuses a group expecting to pick numbers. Run the turn order on the night with our White Elephant generator, and settle steal limits ahead of time using the Yankee Swap rules.
Who Elfster Is Not For
Elfster is the wrong choice for a group that wants a draw done in two minutes with no sign-ups. A family of five drawing names at Thanksgiving dinner does not need wishlists, reminders or address collection. DrawNames sends the matches by text and gets out of the way.
Elfster is also a weaker fit for a family that shops for each other all year and mainly wants to avoid duplicate gifts. Giftster’s hidden purchase marks solve that job directly. Groups that need Polish, German or Italian should use Secret Santa Organizer instead.
What Would Change This Verdict
A paid tier would change the math. Elfster’s free price is the main reason it beats narrower rivals, and the verdict would shift toward DrawNames for small groups if core features moved behind a subscription.
Two feature launches would also move it. If DrawNames added repeat-match protection and multiple exchange formats, Elfster’s lead for office exchanges would shrink. If Elfster sent matches by text message, it would remove the main reason to pick DrawNames.
Elfster Review Verdict
Pick Elfster if you are organizing an office exchange, an extended family draw or any group of 10 or more people who will each want a wishlist. The automatic draw, exclusions, repeat-match protection and anonymous questions cover the jobs that usually fall on the organizer, and none of it costs money as of October 2026.
Skip Elfster for a tiny, last-minute draw, where DrawNames is faster, or a year-round family registry, where Giftster fits better. For more options side by side, see our list of Elfster alternatives and the DrawNames vs Elfster breakdown.
